• Yahoo! Big Thinkers India series: Six Degrees: The Science of A Connected Age

2008-09-10 15:00:00
The Leela Palace Kempinski Bangalore, 23 Airport Road, Bangalore, KARNATAKA.
Abstract We've all heard of the small world phenomenon--the idea that each one of us can be connected to everyone else through only "six degrees of separation". But where did this idea come from? Is it true? And if it is, what implications does it have for the problems of modern society? In this talk, I sketch out the scholarly history of the small world problem (alongside its meteoric rise in popular culture), from its origins in sociology to an explosion of recent work in physics and mathematics. I also discuss (very briefly) the importance of "six degrees" to a range of issues, from individuals searching for jobs and organizations solving complex problems, to the spread of disease epidemics and the cascade-like dynamics of cultural fads. In the modern world, I argue, it is not sufficient simply to recognize that we are all connected; we must understand both the patterns of those connections and they way they drive our individual and collective behavior. Speaker Duncan Watts is principal research scientist at Yahoo! Research, where he directs the Human Social Dynamics group. He is also professor of sociology at Columbia University, and an external faculty member of the Santa Fe Institute. His research on social networks and collective dynamics has appeared in a wide range of journals, from Nature, Science, and Physical Review Letters to the American Journal of Sociology. He is also the author of Six Degrees: The Science of a Connected Age (W.W. Norton, 2003) and Small Worlds: The Dynamics of Networks between Order and Randomness (Princeton University Press, 1999). He holds a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of New South Wales, and Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Cornell University. Yahoo! Big Thinkers India Series After a huge success since its inception in January 2007, we invite you to another series of quarterly lectures this year on science, technology and the internet in India. • International Conference - Aviation World Congress India

2008-09-23 08:00:00
The Leela Palace Kempinski Bangalore, 23 Airport Road, Bangalore, KARNATAKA.
Over the last 5 years, India’s airline sector has altered radically since the first low cost carrier, Air Deccan launched in August 2003. Having expanded at growth rates of over 20% over the last 5 years, growing from circa 40m passengers p.a. to over 110m p.a., served by a number of new entrants engaging in the market, this is clearly a market that is one of the most exciting in the world. What is holding it back is again the issue of infrastructure itself, and within the aviation sector that is the role of airports. With most of the India’s airports outdated and inadequate they are the main limiting factor for the further expansion and growth of the airline sector. In response to this issue the government has undertaken a $51bn modernisation programme of India’s airports which is the second largest airport redevelopment programme in the world. And it has created Vision 2020 which aims to build 500 world class airports by 2020 outstripping most other countries. The main focus of this event is to bring together senior international and domestic executives in one place to unearth and discuss the key top level opportunities and challenges facing the Indian aviation sector. The next step is to then identify solutions and solution makers who can have Vision 2020 become a reality. Both the airport construction and airline sectors are very important and have huge growth potential behind them. We will cover both sectors equally over the two conference days (airlines and airport construction) and there is also potential to have 2 half day workshops covering key issues in both sectors separately. more» Category: Commercial

• Yahoo! Big Thinkers India series: Computational Advertising

2008-12-04 15:00:00
The Leela Palace Kempinski Bangalore, 23 Airport Road, Bangalore, KARNATAKA.
Abstract Computational advertising is an emerging new scientific sub-discipline, at the intersection of large scale search and text analysis, information retrieval, statistical modeling, machine learning, classification, optimization, and microeconomics. The central challenge of computational advertising is to find the "best match" between a given user in a given context and a suitable advertisement. The context could be a user entering a query in a search engine ("sponsored search") , a user reading a web page ("content match" and "display ads"), a user watching a movie on a portable device, and so on. The information about the user can vary from scarily detailed to practically nil. The number of potential advertisements might be in the billions. Thus, depending on the definition of "best match" this challenge leads to a variety of massive optimization and search problems, with complicated constraints. This talk will give an introduction to this area and give a "taste" of some recent results. Speaker Andrei Broder is a Fellow and Vice President for Computational Advertising in Yahoo! Research. Previously he was an IBM Distinguished Engineer and the CTO of the Institute for Search and Text Analysis in IBM Research. From 1999 until 2002 he was Vice President for Research and Chief Scientist at the AltaVista Company. Previously he was a senior member of the research staff at Compaq's Systems Research Center in Palo Alto. He graduated Summa cum Laude from Technion, the Israeli Institute of Technology, and obtained his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computer Science at Stanford University under Don Knuth. His current research interests are centered around computational advertising, web search, context-driven information supply, and randomized algorithms. Broder is co-winner of the Best Paper award at WWW6 (for his work on duplicate elimination of web pages) and at WWW9 (for his work on mapping the web). He has authored more than eighty papers and was awarded over twenty patents. He is an ACM Fellow, an IEEE fellow, and past chair of the IEEE Technical Committee on Mathematical Foundations of Computing. Yahoo!
